Product Description
Conservative talk radio's fastest-growing superstar is also a New York Times bestselling phenomenon: the author of the groundbreaking critique of the Supreme Court, Men in Black, and the deeply personal dog lover's memoir Rescuing Sprite, Mark R. Levin now delivers the book that characterizes both his devotion to his more than 5 million listeners and his love of our country and the legacy of our Founding Fathers: Liberty and Tyranny is Mark R. Levin's clarion call to conservative America, a new manifesto for the conservative movement for the 21st century.

In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has steadily snowballed since President Roosevelt's New Deal of the 1930s and resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for re-enforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. Conservative beliefs in individual freedoms do in the end stand for liberty for all Americans, while liberal dictates lead to the breakdown of civilized society -- in short, tyranny. Looking back to look to the future, Levin writes "conservatism is the antidote to tyranny precisely because its principles are our founding principles." And in a series of powerful essays, Levin lays out how conservatives can counter the liberal corrosion that has filtered into every timely issue affecting our daily lives, from the economy to health care, global warming, immigration, and more -- and illustrates how change, as seen through the conservative lens, is always prudent, and always an enhancement to individual freedom.

As provocative, well-reasoned, robust, and informed as his on-air commentary, Levin's narrative will galvanize readers to begin a new era in conservative thinking and action. Liberty and Tyranny provides a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for revitalizing the conservative vision and ensuring the preservation of American society.

5 out of 5 stars Conservative Catechism   March 24, 2009

This book is perfect for the individual who has always "felt" conservative, but couldn't quite explain herself. Mark Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny" begins with an excellent overview of where our country is as a constitutional republic and how we got here. He then states clearly his book's theme and rallying cry -- Conservatives must know the philosophical foundations for the principles they purport to advance in order to defend liberty from the "soft tyranny" of modern liberalism.

Levin goes on meticulously (many more than 300 endnotes), but plainly explaining the principles of classic conservative philosophy of "prudent" progress, a government that is subservient to the people (rather than the other way around), the fundamental truth that rights are not derived from the government but from a higher power, that the free market system more than any other in history provides the best, most efficient and most just opportunity for individual prosperity as well as for the general welfare, and much much more.

Levin's book provides ample evidence of government encroachment on individual liberty and our country's descent into the soft tyranny warned of by Alexis de Tocqueville in our country's earliest years. Economic regulation, environmental extremism, the usurpation of representative government by the judiciary, unprecedented and uncontrolled illegal influx of people into out country, and the like threaten our economic viability. Finally, Levin's book details how the liberal (and some so-called conservative) political elite rejects the notion of American Exceptionalism and seek to surrender voluntarily the sovereignty our forefathers fought and died to give and to preserve for us.

This is a must read for those who wish to understand, defend and advance Conservatism

5 out of 5 stars The Left doth protest too much...with their silence   March 24, 2009

In general, the louder someone complains, the closer you are to the truth. I anticipate numerous ad hominem 'reviews' from statists posted here. Do not let them talk you out of reading Liberty & Tyranny.

In any given generation, there are only a handful authors and thinkers whose creations can survive the ravages of time and the shifting sands of societal evolution. It is rarer still when a key book is written, recognized, and celebrated contemporarily.

Mark R. Levin logically lays out what has made the United States of America different from all other nations in the history of humanity. He re-introduces us to the founders and framers, and those people who inspired them long ago. At its most basic elements, our country was founded on the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...and that we have these rights conferred on us, not by man or government, but by Natural Law, which originates with the Creator. Mr. Levin puts us back in touch with our founding doctrines, which are the at the very heart of what conservatism is and has always been.

For too long, Conservatives have let themselves be defined by the media. Mr. Levin's book recasts what it is to be a proud Conservative, and gives voice to those who are often silent in the face of ideological slander. If you believe in this great country, if you believe in truth and honesty, if you believe in life and principles, if you believe in freedom and patriotism, if you believe that all people are created equal and it is up to the individual to succeed according to their talents and interests, and if you believe in a smaller efficient government, and lower taxes, then this book is for you.

This is just the beginning. Though primarily written for the domestic market, there are certain truisms that speak to oppressed people globally. When L&T is translated, it may well become the Liberty Bell of our time as it exposes the persona of the pied piper-like statists.

...meanwhile, a deafening silence from ALL major media outlets. How much longer are they going to ignore Liberty & Tyranny? If you are ever asked "What media bias?" by your liberal friends, use this as your prime example.

5 out of 5 stars The case for liberty   March 24, 2009

Mark Levin has taken the principles of America's founding fathers and applied them to the pressing issues of the day (free markets, government spending, national security, and the environment) to make a compelling case for less government and more liberty. He shows how the inevitable end of ever larger government is tyranny. It is rare that a book about political philosophy can be made as interesting and accessible as this one. I would recommend this book to conservatives, as well as to independents or progressives who want to understand the conservative way of thinking.

5 out of 5 stars THE Voice for our Times   March 24, 2009

Finally, someone is able to encapsulate the current mess the US is in into a succinct, comprehensive thesis that explains not only where we are, how we got here but, most importantly, what to do about it.

An engrossing read that introduces new terminology in the use of the word 'Statist' instead of 'Liberal' to better pinpoint the mindset and agenda of the far left (as they have strayed so far from the path that to call them liberal is to insult true liberals everywhere). Mark Levine deserves two thumbs up, five stars, and a Medal of Honor for telling it like it is.

5 out of 5 stars Awake and Ready for Action...It's Time to Organize the Patriots to Defend Liberty Once Again   January 31, 2010

I thoroughly enjoyed Mark Levin's book. Instead of describing its excellent points, as others have done so eloquently, I would like to describe how it has achieved what I see as its intended purpose, which is to educate those of us who have not paid enough attention to our political environment as we should have.

With such low voter turnout across America in most elections, even in our Presidential elections, I believe that my situation is very common. I admit to not actively being involved in Politics much in the past. This is partly because I have felt that there were more productive things to do with my time, and partly because I've felt that I would not be able to make enough of a difference as one person.

To put it bluntly, I was politically asleep and expecting others to run our Country without my input. I thought they would do a "good enough" job of it. I admit I was wrong.

With this recent strong turn toward the left and toward Socialism, I have felt betrayed by my elected officials. It is books like this, Tommy Newberry's, Sarah Palin's, and others that have made me realize that I've made been making a big mistake by ignoring my political duty.

It was shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when the Japanese so blatantly exposed their plan for domination of the entire Pacific region, that the Japanese realized they had awoken a sleeping giant, one that was willing to fight back.

Similarly, Barack Obama's attack on the successful of America has blatantly exposed the Liberal's plans to turn America into a Socialist State, and his move toward Tyranny has awoken the Sleeping Giant once again. Those who have not been involved before (like myself) are now becoming active. Levin's book is forming a grass roots movement of Patriots who are eager once again to defend our inalienable right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

America needs people who are willing to use their voice and vote in every situation where our Constitutional rights are in jeopardy. Patriots with upright principles, who not only build strong businesses and do good things for others, but who pay attention to politics and fight for our freedoms here at home, with our Votes and our Voices.

I believe Mark Levin's book is needed to educate all Americans, so we become a "Mighty Force" to defend Liberty and defeat Socialism. Levin is an outstanding writer who communicates the Conservative Manifesto extremely well. Levin makes it very obvious that the liberal agenda is one of Tyranny and it must no longer be viewed as anything but intentional. It is no longer a benign cancer, but active and aggressive and if left alone, fatal to America.

And in a similar regard, Tommy Newberry's book, The War On Success: How the Obama Agenda Is Shattering the American Dream is the perfect companion, because it provides the basics of what it means to be a successful American Patriot.

Patriotism is no longer being taught in our liberal educational system and it certainly cannot be gleaned from our liberal news media, nor from the liberal television and movie industries. Being a successful Patriot and Citizen of the United States is NOT just being born within our borders. It is holding to the ideals that create freedom and liberty and that gives us the ability to pursue happiness in whatever form we feel is right, so long as it does not infringe on the rights of others.

Both Levin's and Newberry's books teach us how to follow patriotic principles in politics, like our founding fathers did. Right now our way of life is being jeopardized and we must rise up to defend it. It is time to train an army of conservative voters how to preserve liberty, stop the war on success, and to defeat socialism.

The hour is late. Obama has already made huge progress against businesses and against our American free enterprise system and has moved us toward socialism and the removal of our personal liberties. I believe it is time for us to wake up and take action.

I realize now that doing nothing was the wrong decision for me to make. I hope that you will not make that same mistake. It is time to speak up and vote for (and fight for) Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness and to make America free from tyranny once again.

I give this book 5 stars, because it is not only well written, but because it accomplishes its' task of waking people up and educating us. This book is exactly what our Country truly needs.
