Best Prenatal Fitness Video I've Found So Far December 29, 2008 Mona's Mom (Salt Lake City, UT United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've been trying a lot of prenatal fitness videos lately, and I haven't been all that impressed. My husband bought me this one for Christmas and it is head and shoulders above the other videos I've tried. Granted, it's not the same as taking a class in person, but that's not much of an option for me as a second-time mom, and I found Jennifer Wolfe's approach to prenatal yoga to be fairly unique compared to other videos.
The modifications she's made to create a vinyasa that will work in pregnancy feel very fluid to me (e.g., moving the thumbs together in downward-facing dog to allow room for a leg to come forward around a big belly). I tried some more strenuous yoga with my first pregnancy and found it too much for me, but this time around, with this video, I feel challenged but strong, especially in my arms and upper body. I'm also still experiencing the late 1st trimester exhaustion and was worried this would just leave me more tired; on the contrary, I left the practice feeling energized. My 3.5-year-old loved it, too. She did the 15-minute practice with me and then asked to do it again when we were done!
I love that I can choose to do a 15-, 30- or 45-minute practice. This really works well while I try to fit in exercise and keep up with a preschooler.
There were a couple of movements that tweaked some pains I have in my lower abdominal muscles/ligaments, but I just backed off and did a slightly less deep version of the stretch. I've never found a video that fit my body perfectly, pregnant or not, so I've become accustomed to modifying as my body directs me to.
Great Yoga at a Great Price January 14, 2008 NutMeg (Los Angeles, CA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
After reading reviews for prenatal dvds, i opted for this one because 1) hints that the yoga would be challenging and strength building and 2) the 15- 30- and 45- minute options. My husband and I practice with the dvd 3x a week and he enjoys the workout as well. Also, a great feature is that the instructor does modification for 1st trimester while she is joined by pregnant students who do modifications for both the 2nd and 3rd trimester. The dvd is a great alternative to attending prenatal classes that while being beneficial can add up financially. Also, other reviews of Jennifer Wolfe's prenatal practices critique the rest and relaxing segment at the end of the practice, I find it simple to stop the dvd and do my own.
Excellent! Challenging!!! Rewarding!!! January 13, 2008 Elena Lozano (West Palm, Florida) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic YOGA video for pregnant women, however, it is very clear that this video is for those women who are familiar with yoga, particularly vinyasa yoga. It is most certainly not for beginners. In addition, I believe the workouts are extremely challenging and one who is beginning (someone who wants to take on the challenge) needs to begin very slowly (Jennifer does make adequate modifications, but I agree that there is still a lot of explanation missing for beginners!). It is also true that having done the workouts in the video one feels extremely strong, motivated, and full of energy, but I wouldn't say it's a video that is "soft" on a pregnant woman's body. It's challenging!!! It's hard and it's for those women who are physically accustomed to yoga AND WANT TO CONTINUE practicing the physical rewards that vinyasa yoga provides while being pregnant. In this way, I firmly beleive this video is empowering. Again, the only point I want to make is that it is not a video that provides "relaxation" and "relief"-it's more a difficult workout! The extra perk is that if one is busy, you can use the 15 min workout and get a great workout. If one has a bit more time, you can complete the 30 or 45 min workouts that leave you SWEATy and sore!!!
MY sister, who is not pregnant did this video with me and agreed that it was hard!!! For those who are interested in a softer side of yoga, I used Anne Getty's video for my first pregnancy and her video helped me during pregnancy and more importantly during labor. I successfully had my baby boy without one drop of medication and felt "great" after giving birth. I attribute this all to yoga! Her video is available at amazon, so buy it if you want a softer practice, but one that will help strengthen you softly.
great workout option March 12, 2008 Book buyer 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this DVD. I didn't have that much yoga experience before trying it (a few Ashtanga classes way back), so was hesitant about buying, but as someone who was in good shape before pregnancy I found this DVD challenging, but not too challenging. I would recommend it to others looking for a challenging prenatal workout, even without much yoga experience. It's lot of fun and having the options for different length practices is great.
Love these workouts March 26, 2008 Joyflyer (Townville, SC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm no guru, but have been practicing Power Yoga faithfully since getting hooked on it in July 2007 when a knee injury stopped me in my running tracks. After learning I was pregnant, I looked for a workout that didn't treat the pregnant body as though it were a handicap that couldn't handle a real workout. I find Jennifer's workouts to be challenging, yet sensitive to my changing body. I also glean from her how to modify my other workouts to continue my practice and keep it all interesting. I can't do child's pose (the knee injury), which she goes to frequently, but instead just go to down dog. I love the options for shorter and longer workouts. I have her full-length DVD, and like it, as well. But I don't always have 1:20 to dedicate to yoga, sadly.
